How To Choose The Best Swimming Pool Filter

Tip! The primary intention behind building an in ground pool is to spend quality time with family, friends, and children right in the backyard. Apart from this, many vacation homeowners and others opt to build in ground pools, as they increase the value of the real estate. When considering in ground pools, it is important for potential customers to consult with professionals and gather adequate information.

A lot of folks seem to be confused about which filter will work best for their swimming pool. There is no one simple answer for that question, but the more you understand about swimming pool filters the better decision you can make.

There are three main types of swimming pool filters and they are sand, cartridge, or diatomaceous earth. Actually, any of the three will do a fine job of filtering your pool, but there are advantages and disadvantages for each of them. Let’s see what they are.

Sand filters — these are very simple filters that use a layer of sand that the swimming pool water is pumped through to clean and filter out impurities from the water. The dirty water goes in one side and it comes out clean on the other side of the filter. Eventually, the filter gets plugged though and will have to be backwashed to remove the debris. Often this has to be done every couple of weeks or so.

Cartridge filters — these are perhaps the easiest to understand and use. They work much the same way that an oil filter does for your car’s engine. The dirty water goes into the filter, passes through the filter material, deposits the debris on the material, and then exits back to the pool. Some cartridges must have their filter material replaced every few weeks or so, and others can be cleaned only once or twice a season and then reused.

Diatomaceous earth — this filter is considered the best water polisher of the three filters mentioned. The tiny diatoms can filter out debris as small as 5 microns from your water, making it an excellent cleaner. Similar to the sand filter, the diatomaceous earth filter must be backwashed every so often when the pressure rises in the filter. The old diatomaceous earth is washed away, and the new earth is applied by you to the filter through the pool skimmer.

Tip! Swimming pools are tamer than the ocean and lakes, but never turn your back on them. For anyone who would rather not take a dip in the sea at freezing temperatures, or during a storm, or during a spate of shark attacks, swimming pools are a viable, controlled alternative. Most people live in neighborhoods or apartment complexes which have swimming pools near them, or within them.

So what is the best swimming pool filter for you? Well that all the depends on several factors. What is most important to you? If you want low maintenance of a pool filter, then the cartridge filter is what you should go for. If you want an absolutely reliable, long-lasting filter, then the sand filter may be your best choice. If on the other hand, having the cleanest water possible is a high priority for you, then the diatomaceous earth filter just simply can’t be beat. And keep in mind that you can add diatomaceous earth to both the sand filter and a cartridge filter to improve their water cleaning capabilities without causing any problems in the process too.

Hopefully, this article has helped you understand a little bit more about the different kinds of swimming pool filters that are available, how they work, and what you can expect from each one. By examining the features listed above you should be able to decide which swimming pool filter will work best for you.

Tip! Each filter has pros and cons. Sand filters are easiest to operate and cheapest to maintain. Most people who own sand filters fail to understand how they work. Biggest problem, they backwash too often.

A Brief History of Swimming Pools

Tip! Swimming pool covers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and general types. There are solar swimming pool covers that work to keep the water warm as well as warm the water using the suns heat. Safety pool covers do just what it says it does, it keeps the swimming pool safe from unwanted entry of the humans or animals.

Swimming is, by far, one of the most popular pastimes in the world. It is also one of the oldest. As an organized activity, swimming dates back to around 2500 BC. Swimming was immensely popular in ancient Egypt, and there are a number of relics from the period which depict the act of swimming in vivid and awe-inspiring detail. In ancient Greece and Rome, swimming was taught to boys as part of their elementary school curriculum. Furthermore, the first known public swimming pools were built in Rome.

Under the direction of a wealthy Roman lord named Gaius Maecenas, the first heated swimming pool was also built for public use. Plato, himself, once declared that anyone who could not swim lacked a proper education. Who dares to argue with him? Aside from the Greeks and Romans, many other ancient cultures have left evidence of their love for swimming; among them the Babylonians, Assyrians, and Phoenicians. There is also evidence of competitive swimming in Japan over 2000 years ago.

In the 1830’s, swimming became extremely popular in England with the establishment of various swim clubs. At the time, the breaststroke was the most oft used technique. In 1885, Captain Matthew Webb became the first man to swim across the English Channel and the breaststroke was his technique of choice. Two of the most popular swim clubs from the time were The Otter Swimming Club and The Leander Swimming Club.

In 1896, the first of the modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. Naturally, competitive swimming played a significant role. The swimming event was held in the Aegean Sea, in the bay of Zea. The gold medalist for the swimming event was a fellow named Alfred Hoyos Guttman. Of the event, he said that his greatest struggle “was against the towering twelve-foot waves and the terribly cold water.” Swimming continues to play a prominent role in the Olympic Games.

Swimming continues to be the sport of choice for many of today’s athletes. Most cities have public swimming facilities, where you can swim for competitively or merely for fun. In fact, a number of public swimming areas also offer lessons for a very reasonable price. If you are a keen swimmer, you might even consider installing a pool in your backyard. With summer just around the corner, it would be a good time to start planning.
